A Very Important Reminder!

Win it before you can buy it!

This is how this works... everyone who is signed up for my newsletter is automatically entered to win a free e-copy of any new book I release. April 28th THE DAY BEFORE hits the shelves. That means a April 27th I'll pick a winner.

And that's not even the fun part!

After talking to my publicist at Harper Voyager and batting my eyes and promising to be a good little author I convinced them to give me extra ebooks to giveaway. Which means more winners for the newsletter giveaway.

To keep things fair, and give you better odds of winning, I'll give away one book per 100 people signed up for the newsletter. Which will keep your chances of winning 1:100 regardless of how many people sign up. I can give up to 20 books away, so feel free to tell your friends, nudge your significant other, and convince the people at school and work to sign up.

Nitty Gritty Details: The newsletter only comes out when there is a big announcement, a cover reveal, and event scheduled, or a new release.

Bonus: If you sign up for the Impulse Buy newsletter you will be entered to win a copy of THE DAY BEFORE. The Impulse Buy newsletter comes out every Tuesday highlighting a new title that costs less than $5USD and is guaranteed professionally edited.

Cover Art Is Coming!

Hello from the hotel!

Last time I had internet this slow I was using dial-up and AIM. No matter. I'll survive. The internet is slow but how many hotels offer a full kitchen with dishwasher and oven? Other hotels offer fresh-baked cookies, this one lets you bake your own!

If you're stuck in a hotel for a week or so in the Kansas City area I recommend Chase Suites and Hotels. Having a kitchen is a miracle.

And so is having cover art. The fabulous Victoria Miller who designed the cover for EVEN VILLAINS GO TO THE MOVIES came back to do EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS and she's really knocked it out of the park.

So, here's the deal. I really hate newsletters because my email is already full enough. However, for a lot of people reading the blog and hitting social media is hard to do daily and they miss announcements about new releases. The happy compromise between these two is for me to only send out a newsletter when I have big news, new cover art, or a new release. And to compensate you for taking up email inbox space everyone who subscribes to the newsletter is automatically entered in a drawing for a free copy of the new release.

Newsletter subscribers also get a free first peek at the cover art and stories. Which means I'm sending a letter out this weekend to everyone with a sneak peek at the cover art for EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS. And you need to sign up for the newsletter so you can see that cover art and read the opening pages of INTERNS.

Newsletters not your bag? No worries. There are other ways to get alerts for new books.

EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS... and release dates!

Oh, my lovelies! I have the best news to start your weekend: EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS has a tentative release date. And a solid print date.

Let me explain the tentative release date thing... Between me writing the book and you reading the book there are a few dozen unsung heroes and unseen steps. There's the content and line editors, the production team, the cover artists, the publicist who gets ARC (advanced read copies) out for review, and the the formatter who turns what I write into the ebook that magically appears on your reader. Or, sometimes, the formatter who turns the words on the computer into a book that you hold in your hand and that fits on a shelf.

When I signed my first book with Breathless Press they were a fairly small press and it was a simple process because my line editor and book formatter were the same person and I think he did the publicity as well. Back then, the time between signing the contract and seeing the finished product was about four months. Now things are a little different.

The press is bigger, there are more authors, we have more cover artists and formatters. That means six to eight months to production (still not to bad considering some big presses take years).

The very best way for you to know the exact, updated release date is to sign up for my newsletter. I promise, I don't spam. You aren't going to get weekly or monthly emails from me. You aren't going to get random FWD: Spam! messages from me or chain letters. I send out release dates, cover art, and contest info and that's it.

All of that information comes to the newsletter subscribers first. You get the first look at the new covers. You get to know the release date first. You get to know about book deals and sales first. And, because I know some of you are like me and signing up for newsletters is a hellish burden you'll only accept if there's a bribe, there is always one author copy set aside for a lucky newsletter subscriber.

In 2015 that means there will be two newsletter subscribers who get signed copies of EVEN VILLAINS GO TO THE MOVIES and EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS along with the ebook copy of INTERNS. Three separate chances to win free books just for giving me your email address. It's not a bad deal.

And you can unsubscribe any time you want. No hard feelings. I understand how cluttered in-boxes can get.

Don't You Have A Newsletter?

I've gotten this question a couple of times over the past month so I'm addressing it here on the blog. Yes, I do have a newsletter.

Originally I planned on sending out a newsletter every month to update you about books, and the most popular blog posts, and what was going on... and then I signed up for newsletters by authors who do this and I found myself deleting every single one. I'm not a newsletter person. I don't like newsletters.

But I understand that not everyone has time for social media and blog reading. That's cool. I should probably spend less time on the computer too. For those people who only want a heads up when a new book is coming out I have the newsletter.

When I have a publication date for the anthology SENSATIONS is in, I'll send out a newsletter.

When I have a publication date for Heroes and Villains Book 2, I'll send out a newsletter.

If you read my blog, follow me on Twitter, or follow me on FaceBook you probably don't need to be signed up for the newsletter. I don't think there's any way you could possibly miss a book announcement if you follow me on social media. The only advantage to the newsletter is that one newsletter follower will win an ARC of my books as I announce them. I get a certain number of author copies and the newsletter followers are automatically entered to win one.

So yes, Dear Reader, there is a newsletter. I hope to send something out on that newsletter in the next month.

If you'd rather be eaten alive by ants than have one more thing delivered to your inbox you can always find me here at the blog, on Twitter, on FaceBook (or friend me Liana Brooks... just look for the socks), and on GoodReads.

Newsletters, Cursed Manuscripts, and Cover Art

Back in July I blogged about my Short Story Dilemma. I was collecting rejection slips not for bad writing, but because of the bad economy. Even worse, I had previously-published rights-reverted stories sitting on my hard drive doing nothing. The solution for me was to get some cover art and prepare to put those stories up through Smashwords and Amazon.

It was that or keep sending out my Cursed Manuscript and watch the collapse of modern society as it's dark powers destroyed small ezines. I figure Amazon won't collapse under the curse. If it does, I'm sorry.

Several eagle-eyed readers already spotted the cover for SEVENTY up on the Published Works page. It isn't for sale yet. The original story was published in M-BRANE and was very lean. I'm editing and adding back in a few scenes that took the story over word count originally, but that I want back in the book. Call it bonus content for the extended edition.

This morning I had more cover art in my in-box, this time for a contemporary short story. There are a few niggling details I need to fix (a dated reference to when the story was written that I may or may not leave) and that story will be made available.

That's where things get exciting for you. The blog now has a newsletter attached (look to the left under the search bar) and the newsletter means free stuff for you. I'm grateful for all the support and encouragement blog readers have given me over the years. There are days when a positive comment on the blog is the difference between wallowing in misery and drying my tears and writing the next draft.

Sending out freebies like coupons or newsletter-only giveaways seems like a good way to repay you. So feel free to sign-up (or not), and keep watching for cover art reveals later this month.
