Business Cards

So: Business Cards

I can think of a couple of times I really wish I'd had a business card with me. When I tell people I'm a writer and I know they won't remember my name, I wish I could hand them a card. When I'm talking to people about SFR, a genre most people have never heard of, I wish I had a business card. When I'm trying to get people to remember my email I most emphatically wish I had a business card.

But... they tend to be pricier than I like, there really isn't a good traditional business card for a sci-fi author, and I hated all the designs I was finding. Really, really, from-the-bottom-of-my-shriveled-heart loathed the designs I'd found over the past few years. They were icky.

Than someone tipped me off about Moo.com (which isn't reimbursing me in any way for this, but they can if they want to!) and I found an option that works for authors. Namely, using book covers as the art for the business card. Instead of handing out just my name on some card stock I can hand out little mini pieces of cover art! Yay!

This is what the design currently looks like. It's not final, official, or ordered yet. And - yes - there is a cover missing (ten points to Gryffindor if you can name the missing title!) because the words run to the edge and get cut off. Which means a certain piece of microfiction might be getting a cover update. More on that later.

The real reason I dragged your attention away from whatever important thing you were doing was to ask you what you thought of the cards. To much? To little? I now it's blurry on the blog, but overall, what are you thinking? Are you feeling it?

  1. Those are nice cards. They must be done with the new dimensions for business cards or were you planning on folding them? I've seen both variations and find they stand out from the traditional cards.

Oh, and the missing title is Real Lies. Yay, Gryffindor!

    1. That's the front and back proof images. They'll look like normal cards when printed.

10 Points to Gryffindor! It is REAL LIES that's missing because it doesn't have enough of an edge. The anthology cover us dicey too.

    2. Duh, now I see the little Front and Back labels. I really do miss details when I'm tired.

  2. I love the idea of putting your book covers on there. So you're having an equal number of each cover printed out, and then you will hand them out more or less randomly (unless, of course, someone expresses interest in a particular title)?

    1. The pack I'm looking at has 50 cards, so there'd be 10 of each card unless I add Real Lies back in. I'd hand out the cards randomly unless I'd been talking to someone about a specific book. If we'd been chatting about SFR I'd probably hand you the TALES FROM THE SFR BRIGADE because it's a free anthology which lets you try different styles of SFR.

Or I'd let people pick at random

  3. Hrmm. It's hard for me to judge. They look good here, but I'd need to actually have the card in hand to make a final judgement.

  4. The only other thing I could see adding is a QR code that points people to something like an Amazon author page, so they could see the stories in a context where they might actually BUY them... ;)

  5. More just a statement of fact. Small, pretty colorful things don't last very long in my house (heavy sensory seeking severely autistic daughter among other reasons).
