When Do You Write?

I used to have a simple writing schedule. I put the kids in bed by 8pm and would spend the next two hours with a glass of ice water and the computer blowing up things, killing characters, and weeping over edits. It was a good life.

Now things are getting complicated.

A newborn at home means I'm up every 2-3 hours during the night, usually for at least 30 minutes. I rush the older two to school at 8 in the morning and I'm usually home by 9am to feed the baby again, do the dishes, and eat some breakfast. By 10am I'm ready to sleep and the baby is ready for a 3 hour power nap.

Awesome! I love naps!

But it means that I wake up and have an hour before I need to go get the older two. An hour I spend finishing house work, feeding the baby, and eating my own lunch.

Twice a week we come straight home from school and I have three hours to force Eldest to do homework under threat of No Playtime, make dinner, and keep Small and Pink from destroying all the housework I did in the morning. Then comes dinner, whining, baths, complaining, and bedtime.

Now it's 8pm again and I'm exhausted.

Three times a week I spend the three hours dragging kids to speech therapy and piano lessons. That means keeping a small one quiet in a waiting room the size of a matchbox or forcing Eldest to do homework when there are so many more interesting distractions around.

If I skipped the morning nap I could have three solid hours of write time with no kids distracting me.

But then I'd fall asleep while driving or cooking dinner.

So, you tell me, where does writing fit in?

For all the rest of you with work schedules, kids, zombie hordes, and other distractions, where do you fit writing into your day? Do you steal a few hours on the bus ride commute in the morning? Give up a few hours of sleep? Wait until the weekend?

Admit it... you cloned yourself, didn't you?

  1. I mainly write in the evening but I def. need to figure out how to steal time. Sleep's not that important is it?

  2. Oh, well, I wouldn't know how to do it, but a few things come to mind--baby's ready for a three hour nap, so you sleep two and write for the other one hour.

In the evening, take thirty minutes or so before you crash.

Wake up thirty minutes earlier and get some words out.

Fit as much time as you can in during the weekend -- ask hubby to take over for two hours.

    Good luck, Liana!

  3. I recently graduated from college, so I have a lot of time to write. I'm one of the lucky ones, because my parents are kind enough to support me while I write and build a career and financial stability.

My writing schedule (on a good day) includes:

    Monday - Friday 9:00 - 2:00 (break) 3:00 - 4:00
    After dinner from 5:30 - 6:30.

I don't like writing on the weekends, but if I do, then I only write for two hours. My weekends are reserved for reading.

  4. I generally write in the afternoons/evenings after work and nap. But them, I have no other real obligations or kids so I guess that says something. ;)

  5. I write on vacations, and during classes in school that bore me :) haha! as for you it sounds like you're VERY busy. maybe if you really need more time nap for 1 and a half to 2 hours then spend the other hour - hour and a half writing? then u get some sleep and some writing done. best of both worlds. that's the best I can think of, sorry!

  6. Ali- I wrote my first novel during classes my sophomore year of high school. Boredom in Algebra II led to my notebook having 3 pages of math notes and the rest filled with novel.

That novel will never see the light of day, but I still have the notebook somewhere.

  7. I write in the afternoon/evenings, after I've come in from work, relaxed, read, completed obligations (book reviews, Japanese). Then I let my muse loose.
