The Lost Posts

During any given week I write three to five blog posts on various subjects. Sometimes it's tongue-in-cheek, sometimes the posts are more serious. About half the time I save the post rather than publishing it to the blog.

Some of the posts aren't finished, others are too personal, some are just ramblings. This happens.

Writers write.

Not everything a writer writes is for a reader. Writers write to express themselves, to understand themselves, to take control of a situation. What a writer gives to a reader should always be their best work.

For the aspiring writers out there I want you to understand that it is okay to write nonsense. It's okay to write fanfic, and fluff, and nonsense, and even to write pure drek. It is all right to write bad. Writing is a process. You will write poorly before you write well. Don't be ashamed of that. You fell down before you walked. Nothing is ever done flawlessly the first time.

Write. Keep writing. Toss, or burn, or laugh at the bad ones. Tuck them away for another day. Forget they existed. Keep writing. Learn to know your style. Learn what your writing says about you, and choose carefully what you want to share with the world.

And, above all else, keep writing.

  1. Phew. That covers an awful lot of the experimental stuff I have sitting on my harddrive.

    1. Experimental is good. I think you have to write it. You have to play and try and fail and learn. If you only let yourself write commercial work, or only write what you feel is Safe, you'll never grow as a writer.
