Help! I have a storage problem!

I'm not joking when I say I don't remember how many times I've moved since college. I've lost track of the states. I've lost track of friends. I've lost bookcases.

And I'm a little bit bitter about losing the bookcases.

Because now I have homeless books.

Every time I move storage becomes a major issue. A bookcase that used to fit in one place is suddenly without a place. The shelves that fit one room perfectly are two inches too long for the new house. The corner hutch has no corner to live in because someone put windows in odd places.

The list of frustrations is endless. Which is why I am on a quest to find affordable, durable, adaptable storage. Shelves and bookcases that can be made to fit anywhere. Shelves and bookcases that won't break my very limited decorating budget (I'm talking $20 or less). Shelves and bookcases that can move with me. Shelves and bookcases that won't take three specialized tools, unicorn tears, and sixty billion hours to build.

In short: I am looking for the perfect storage solution.

I've been toying with the idea of wooden crates painted and nailed to the wall (because: earthquakes!). Someone suggested cinder block shelves. I'm sure there are other options I haven't thought of.

So, dazzle me, my darlings! Find me the perfect storage solution and help me complete my quest for an organized house!

  1. Wall shelves are indeed handy and efficient. I don't have them in my new place, but at my old place (smallish apartment), they definitely helped.

  2. I know these are out of your budget, but I love my folding bookcases. They are half size, stackable - and when I move, foldable and weigh 25 pounds. Can be put up and taken down in seconds (other than the books). Cost about $50 - or $100 for floor to ceiling. The type I buy does not have a top. They are narrow enough to allow variation along walls - I like the Yu Shan Co Folding Bookcase (honey/golden oak color).
