Falling Into Bad Habits

This summer has been the worst for actual productive activity. I'm getting writing done but almost nothing else.

I haven't gone to the gym in two months. I'm still paying the outrageous fees, but I'm not going because getting up, getting dressed, and getting out the door are way too hard on a cold, gray, rainy summer day. These are the kinds of days where you want to roll over in bed and make rude gestures to the universe.

And I can because I work from home.

Finding motivation to get back out there is killing me. So, lay it on me, what do you do to motivate yourself and restart good habits when the bad habits take over?

What's your go-to trick for convincing yourself to do the hard stuff?

  1. I bribe myself. I can have a shiny whatever...Coca-Cola, new plant, nap in the sun, etc...if I get my to-do list done.

    1. Bribes quit working for me after I realized there was no consequence to not having the bribe now. It's horrible. I don't use much self-control.

  2. I use some explicit goal. For example, I need to get back into shape, so I signed up for one of those Spartan obstacle course races. Now, I'm starting to work out because I...foolishly paid money to do a difficult obstacle course race, and I don't want to waste my money, right? Right? :)

    1. That's what I say about the gym, but I'm still in an ankle brace and I knocked my knee out of joint making dinner. I need the super-wimpy-baby-steps program for getting back to working out.
