The Next Big Thing

I was tagged with #TheNextBigThing meme twice, so here it goes!

Ten Interview Questions for The Next Big Thing

What is the working title of your book? You mean I can only pick one project? Okay... let's do JANE DOE.

Where did the idea come from for the book? I remember seeing a movie called THE FACE ON THE MILK CARTON and I the whole idea of missing people and Jane Does intrigued me. And then I thought, "What if you found a Jane Doe, and they had your face?" The book snowballed from there.

What genre does your book fall under? Near-future science fiction with romantic elements. I play with the ideas of clones and time travel in the book. It was a lot of fun to research!

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
I have no idea. I'm not current with the Whose Who of Hollywood. I'd love to have Denzel Washington play Detective Altin, and the main female actress needs to be Spanish.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? A rookie cop investigates her own murder.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? Fingers crossed, this will be the novel that lands me an agent. I love working with a small press for my novellas, and I really have no complaints self-publishing my short stories, but I think JANE DOE deserves the support of a big press. There's more money for cover art and promotion from a big press. And I think JANE DOE has enough cross-genre appeal that it could sell very well with the right backing. It's sci-fi, but it's not so technical and off the wall that it will scare anyone away.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? The first draft? About six weeks. First drafts are easy. Ask me how long it took to edit.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? Oh, that's a bit tricky. There aren't a lot of books addressing these issues in my genre, that's part of the reason I wrote it. I think there might be a thriller out there with a similar idea, but I don't know the title. I saw the blurb once. Sorry.

Who or What inspired you to write this book? It was just the idea of finding your own face on the body of a murder victim. What would you do? What would you do in a society where clones are slaves and it suddenly looks like your entire existence is a lie?

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? JANE DOE has some very complex characters. The murder investigation is just one facet. There's racial integration issues, there's a former soldier with PTSD, there's a girl just trying to find her feet, there's a long-distance fiancee, it's a very layered and emotional book. I hope the readers will fall in love with the book like I have. And, if that doesn't interest you, it has puppies!!!

All right, it has one puppy. His name is Hoss. He's a mastiff. Everybody say, "Awwwww!" You know you want to read about him, don't you?
