Neither does Sonya or anything else I've tried. Please, help me name this character!
Ar Theta One, aka Roan, is a doctor in the Hospital of Little Mercies on the perpetually war-torn planet Pequena. She doesn't expect much out of life, although survival would be nice. The odds aren't in her favor, though, when she's taken to a military post on the moon.
During a military coup the prisoner Roan kept alive for torture saves her life, and loses his own when they crash land on an alien planet.
As a reminder, Roan has the metal shrapnel from the shuttle and a piece of the prisoner's face mask made into a ring. She wears it everywhere. Including to the new university where she teaches, and in front of a man with a familiar face and strange scars.
Explosions, bad decisions, and secrets alienate Roan in her new world. With a past like this haunting her, can she ever build a future?
What's wrong with Roan?
ReplyDeleteMaybe a variation on that name - Roane, Roanne, Roana, Roanna, Rowan, Ruane, Ruen, Rhoan. Those are just the first names to pop into my head.
I like some of those, actually. I need to run them past the UK beta who didn't like Roan. Thanks!
DeleteI also like Roan. When I see the cover and the name together, I think of Rogue from X-Men.
ReplyDeleteJade? Or were you looking for something more feminine?
Jade is a major sidekick in EVERY HERO NEEDS A VILLAIN.
DeleteHow about Rain? You could go with alternate spellings... Rayne, Raine, etc. It has a similar style to Roan, but is different enough that it might work... ?
ReplyDeleteOh, dear, I didn't mean to cause such controversy! It's just to me Roan is a horse. I really like the suggestion of Rowan - doesn't sound too dissimilar but without the equine connotations!
ReplyDeleteI don't know - I like Roan. The horse connotation actually goes well with the heroine's long, graceful neck and "mane" on the cover, IMO. I'd leave it, personally.
ReplyDeleteI like Roann or Roanne. But, that's just me.
