Read a Book!

I loved this post about reading in the bathtub! I didn't even realize there was a debate about this. as soon as I saw my sunken garden tub in our first house *mumblemumble* years ago I knew it was custom made for reading.

Reading in the bathtub is one of the reasons I insist on collecting paperbacks rather than hardcovers (easier to hold) and why I'm not hot on getting a Kindle (electricity + water = Bad Thing).

I have a whole routine worked out. There are certain bubble baths to match each genre of reading. A preferred glass, okay, mug with handle for my drink. Even a set of hand towels specifically set aside each week for bath time reading.

There's something very luxurious about dropping into a bath thick with bubbles, basking in the gentle glow of candlelight, while you read about your favorite topic. I realize romance is the preferred genre for bubblebaths, but I find a light comedy or any book with explosions will work.

I'll sit there until the bubbles run out and the water grows cold. If the book is good, I add more hot water. I'll spend hours in the bathtub, reading.

When my husband was overseas a few years ago Sunday night was my bathtub night. The children were tucked in bed promptly at 7pm, and then I'd go sit with my book in the tub behind a pair of locked doors. One locked door wasn't enough, Eldest is quite proficient with locks. The second lock was absolutely necessary for my peace and relaxation.

Now, well, with three kids it's hard to squeeze in a bubble bath once a week. That's okay, I like curling up on my big, overstuffed couch under a blanket and enjoying a book there too.

What about you? Where do you snuggle up to read?

  1. The closest I come to that is sitting on the side of the bathtub and soaking my feet at the end of the day. I started to do that when I began having arthritic arches and bunion probs (years of wearing uber-heels will do that).

Anyway - I'll sit there reading until the water gets cold. Very relaxing and of course it's quiet alone time.

Other than that - I'll curl up in bed and read. :)

  2. on the couch. if it's cold weather, then a throw is necessary to snuggle in. also, before bedtime...burrowing under the covers. i've ever done the tub baths, so have never read in a tub. usually, if i'm reading in the bathroom, its on the porcelain throne instead. :)

  3. I'm not a bath person. I think because I'm tall and no matter if it's a garden tub or normal tub, I never can get in a comfy position.

So my reading time is in bed while my husband gets our toddler to sleep at night. It's a precious thirty minutes that I guard quite ferociously.

  4. I love to read in bed, and I love to sit outside and read when the weather is nice. I'm a bath reader too but can't stand sitting in there for over a few minutes. But having a favorite blanket no matter where I am (aside from the bath, obviously) is a must.

  5. I love reading in the tub too, but kind of lost the habit when our hot water heater gradually stopped having enough hot water to fill the tub completely. Turned out we needed a replacement, so now there's lots of hot water, but I need to get back into the habit! In the meantime, there's a comfy armchair in the living room that everyone in the house knows is my reading chair, with a soft fleece blanket close by. The chair reclines just the right angle. I love it!
