Wednesday Workout: Magic Mirror

We've spent time examining our faults, our prejudices, and our weaknesses in writing. This weak, we're flipping the mirror around.

The Workout: Identify and list three things you do very well in writing. Place the list somewhere you can see it while you work.

The Purpose: One mistake that very eager writers will make is that, between drafts, they try so hard to correct mistakes they over do it and nullify the things they do well. Which means you have one draft where the dialog is wonderful, and in the next the world-building is great but you've cut the best dialog. Don't! Know what your strengths are and make sure you don't sacrifice that gain for improvement in another area.

  1. Great point, Liana. We do need to know our strengths! Mine are:

    (1) Dialogue
    (2) Suspense
    (3) Building linear plots and POV
    (4) Organizing

    Is that too vague?

  2. No, that's not to vague, as long as you know what you mean. :o)

Now, go put it somewhere you can read it daily. The idea is that this little list will be your shield against bad editing and rejection letters.

If you know you can do *something* right, it's easier to get through the hard stuff.

  3. Hmmm, I'm still working on figuring out what I do well. I'll get back to you later :)
