Just a Little Nudge

I did something new and exciting today, I emailed a publisher asking why I hadn't heard back from them yet. The website said 2-4 weeks, and I waited an extra month on top of that. But after waiting I finally caved in, admitted it would probably be a rejection, and emailed anyway. Really, I prefer to know these things.

Guess what?

The query was lost. They have no record of it! The editor invited me to resubmit. Total time spent for email exchange and a second query to be sent? Less than six hours.

It doesn't take much to send a nudge.

"Dear Editor,
I am writing to inquire about the status of my submission, [title] by [name] that was sent [date].

Thank you for your prompt reply,
[Your Name]
[copy of original query email]"

Sweet and simple! Best of all, it works!

ETA: I went to double-check and make sure the new query had gone through only to find a full request waiting in my in-box. Being polite and persistent pays off!

  1. Wow! That's a great outcome. Even better if it turns into an offer ;)

  2. Awesome! Nice to know nudging pays off. I do only on occasion. Must increase the frequency after your success story. Especially if it goes on to REALLY be a success story. Fingers crossed for that full!

  3. I wasn't expecting the full request. This isn't one of the houses I considered a sure-thing, or even a best-fit, but we'll see what they have to say. :o)

  5. That's awesome (not that they lost your query, but that they asked for a full :D). Good luck!

  7. That is a great story. It shows we do need to follow up for sure. A similar thing happened to me, only it was an actual submission. My email with the story attached was lost somewhere. I ended up resubmitting, and now have a new book releasing in 2012.
