Serendipity and Writing

First, read this fantastic article about Science and Serendipity.

Now, apply to writing!

1) Do More
You will never be published if you never write. You will never get the book done if you don't edit, and write, and write some more. You have to verb your life to get places.

2) Learn More
Do research, read other books, try writing a new genre, play with styles and tones. Anything that keeps the brain active is good!

3) Don't Ignore What You Don't Like
I may not love certain genres, but that doesn't mean I can't learn to like them. Or that I can't write a fabulous YA book if I gave it some time and effort. If you're in a rut with your writing try changing things up. Maybe you have an undiscovered genius for Slipstream Neoromaticism.

  1. I've never thought of that before, not ignoring what I don't like. I suppose exposure is best.

  2. I know there are some genres I've tried and don't feel comfortable with. Really dark horror is one of those. There's a point where it's just to much. And that I feel free skipping all the time.

On the other hand, I'm not a huge fan of literary books, but I do try them. Sometimes I really like the book. Sometimes I just don't get it, I can't get into the world enough to enjoy the story. But I still try and read one every now and then for balance.

  3. Great advice. For years I ignored historical romances (despite a love of both romance and history--aren't I brilliant?). I just recently started reading some of these and I've now discovered a whole area to explore.
