Thanks for the link, L. Should I feel bad for wanting to laugh? In a lot of ways, it's sad that some people can't see things, no matter how many well-intentioned, well-informed people try to help them out.

I'm just trying not to be bitter about all these "artistes" who are so Special that they can't understand the potential of genres outside of pure literature. Because everyone knows you need to be depressing and have a body count of 0 to achieve true artistic expression...
I'm trying to tell myself that they don't like sci-fi because of bad childhoods where they were scared by someone in a Darth Vadar mask rather than that it's too complicated for them to understand. I know most sci-fi tends to slip in math and physics terms, and genetics isn't uncommon, but if you have the IQ of PEZ you shouldn't be *that* intimidated by it.

To be honest, I think that maybe down the road these "outside genres" might be up there with the classics. The classics didn't start out as classics, they started out as people, Dickens for example, who were out to make as much money as possible. Although there are many that don't care for Tolkien or Lewis, they seem to be on their way to the classic shelf. And Asimov(?) in SF perhaps?
To be honest, I don't understand the whole "keeping the Art pure" concept. Art is meant to be looked at and examined. So I'm not the next Rembrandt, Piccasso wasn't either. Art's not so much about expressing yourself, although you may, it's about conveying something to people that they can understand. Otherwise, there's no point.
A lot of people, even those that are in the business, tend to be dismissive about the children's group--children, MG, and YA. Why can't we all just be a big, happy family? :D
