To Martin Luther King Jr.

A toast, to a great American hero. To a man who did something everyone should have done, that anyone could have done, but that no one was willing to do. To the man who changed the world with his peaceful demeanor, his intelligence, and his class. To his family who supported him, to the his parents who raised him.

Black, white, green, or blue Mr. King left a legacy of peace we should all aspire to.

He's been a figure of history since I was born. The civil rights movement wasn't something I grew up with, but I grew up with the world he wanted. A childhood where races were integrated, where no one questioned you having a friend or dating someone who wasn't from your genetic lineage. To an adulthood where race dispute comes as a nasty shock and where a minority president comes as "Well, it's about time!" (I still want a woman president though.)

To Mr. King and those who stood with him, thank you. May you always be remembered among the best our nation has to offer.

  1. This is great, thank you! We celebrate MLK jr. day every year. My sisters boys are African American, and they like them to know their heritage and celebrate. :)
