Friday Random

Random Things I Heard This Week:
- "You know you're in Texas when the Atlanta Braves are described as a 'northern team'."
- "It's flooding, but not bad." o-0

Random Goal of the Week: I'm going to do 100 crunches every day. Don't ask me when or how, but I will. I hate having flabby abs and when I can't squeeze yoga into my schedule I can at least drop and do crunches and push ups.

Random News of the Week: My mother and sister who I haven't really talked to in nearly a month are coming out on Monday! (maybe) Who knew? I thought they were coming in mid-August. Surprise! I'm waiting on a confirmation e-mail or phone call before I tell DH or the kids.

Random Character Problem of the Week: Cyborg Love

Am I the only person who has an entire cast of minor characters who can't stay minor? Half way through my books I realize that the ideas creeping into my head are all minor characters who want their 15 minutes of fame. But, in this case, he just wants the girl.
Evans started life as the by-the-book boss for my semi-retired cop, Harlowe, in Time of Death. I hadn't even finished the book before I knew, somewhere in the future, Harlowe was going to be stuck in a life-or-death situation. It's going to happen. Harlowe is a character I can visualize killing off. I love him, but Harlowe is old, cranky, and he wants to die (not ina neo-goth sort of angst but just tired and ready to rest- it's who he is).
Harlowe's main partner is Kassandra... of Troy.... she's old, and a vampire. But she makes good money as a linguist and is still being perfected. Her character is a little too Mary Sue at the moment. I'm fixing that. She's going to have weaknesses.
Anyways...... long story short. Evans fell in love with Kassandra. And the boy just won't listen to reason! I keep trying to explain the age gap to him, but it isn't getting through. I've tried to explain that Kassandra is an inverterate man hater. But he isn't listening! They do have a lot in common. I think it would be sweet if she fell in love. But I think Evan's is doomed to many books of unrequited love.

Random Concern of the Week: Someone is going to read this post and think I'm insane. I am not crazy! Just because my characters are out of control and have lives of their own does not mean I'm insane! It makes me worry about my sanity and is probably a good sign that I'll spend my golden years lost in the happy wonderland of my mind, but while I'm writing I have a firm grip on the concept of fiction and reality. But, please, let's not ask about dreams.

Random Progress of the Week: I totally fouled up the timeline for DoJ. Dropped more than a chapter accidentally and I'm scrambling to back fill and fix. I've redone the opening page 3 times and still can't get it write...er...right :o) But I do have a very wicked outline for some NaNo fun!

Random Link: The magazine GUD (Greatest Uncommon Denominator) is having a pre-launch buzz contest. They publish literary, genre, poetry, art and articles. Go check them out!

So, what's your random?

  1. If it's any consolation, no writer is going to think you're insane. We're just going to agree with you about your pesky characters!

  2. :o) What a relief!

Some days I don't feel like I'm creating characters, just eavesdropping on far more interesting lives.

Now all I need to do is focus on one voice instead of all of them!

  3. Hey, "Just You" -- I just had to zip over to thank you for your comment on the Frog Blog today. Very, very well said.

Now that I'm here and have looked around a little, I see I'll be staying for some time. Great stuff!
(I LOVE World Domination and Other Distractions.) I see I've found another person to beg to guest blog for me! If I can figure out who you are, I mean. :)

    Thanks again!

  5. :D Run while you still can, I'd say. Unless you like it, in which case hang around looking kinda shifty %-)

Anyway, I agree with weston - you're not insane, just a writer :D So hurry up and write quicker, because this Ice fan is starving for more! :D

(Hehe, Kassandra and Evans - so yes. But slowly. He needs a bit of unrequisition %-))
