Goodbye, Instagram.

For those who don't follow me on Twitter here's a quick recap of the last 24-hours.

- My Instagram account (Alaskanaut) was hacked.
- I logged in, changed the password, and the hacker changed it five minutes later.
- I couldn't log in and my account was now following and posting some unsavory things.
- I reported the hack.
- Instagram told me to send a picture as identification.
- I sent the picture.
- Instagram told me they couldn't identify me by matching my selfie to my other selfies and they could no longer do anything to help me. So sorry. The account belonged to a hacker. Goodbye.

*all the rage*

But I realized I was still logged in on my phone. I tried it, was able to get in, and for the safety of my family and my brand deleted the account.

Instagram customer service wasn't willing to help, and I don't think their security was good enough that I wanted to continue any form of business relationship with them. Instagram had my telephone number, and that wasn't enough for them to use to identify me and get the hacker out of my account.

What did we learn from my very bad Monday?
1) Good passwords are key  - mine obviously wasn't up to snuff and now I need to change all of them.
2) Don't dismiss notifications at 6am because you don't know what's going on. Last time it was someone try to set up an Apple account with my email, this time it was someone trying to hack my Instagram. They succeeded because I dismissed the notification.
3) Customer service is not as helpful as you want them to be.

... so goodbye, Instagram. It was fun while it lasted.

  1. Sorry to hear it about getting hacked. Never been on Instagram, but had other things I've left for similar issues.
