Say Good-Bye to Weakness

Do you know what the hardest thing about going to the gym is?

Breaking a sweat.

Getting sweaty flies in the face of every media-pushed precept. It's not pretty. There's no made-up, hair sleeked, push-up bra beauties in the gym. There's sweat, and smell, and horrible faces made as you fight to keep a ten pound bar from smashing your face.

From day one the world revolves around pain. You fight to get out bed, fight traffic to get to the gym, and then struggle to workout for an hour. Days pass, then weeks, then months. You never see results.

One day, you catch sight of some killer legs reflected in a store window. Tight, tan, long, lean beautiful legs that you wish you had. Only you'd wear better shorts because if your legs looked that hot you would show them off way better than that chick. You glance up to see if she at least has a decent shirt on, and hey! Whaddayaknow!

It's you.

Welcome to the beautiful world of writing. You read the best-sellers and wonder why your book is so flabby. You write, you edit, you cry, you repeat.

You sit down one day to edit, and three hours later find yourself wondering why the author didn't do this... only to realize the book you've been enjoying is your own.

And the hardest part of this is breaking a sweat.

No one wants to step out of their comfort zone. No one wants to hurt. But outside the comfort zone is where you conquer new territory and find the rewards.

Is it hard to get your butt in the chair every day? It is for me. I have trouble waking up every morning to go to the gym. I debate for the entire drive, telling myself I'll take it easy, do a light workout. I lie every time.

Today I did real sit-ups. I'm not talking about the girly-lift-your-shoulders sit ups, but the real ones where tits touch knees and you go from lying flat to sitting up with posture that would make Jane Austen proud.

... I did use Wimp Weight on my triceps today though. It's okay to not be perfect.

JANE DOE is almost done with the read-through. I found myself just reading for fun today. You guys are going to love this book! I can't wait to get it clean so you can read!

So, come on, hit the gym with me tomorrow. Get out of your comfort zone, break a sweat, and show the world how hard you rock!

  1. I absolutely love the anecdotes you did here and the 'tit touch knees' line is a classic. The metaphors work. I'm reaching that point.

  2. A great reminder. Love the analogy.

  3. It's funny, I was just blogging about getting out of my comfort zone. I've got a new personal trainer for the writing world and he does not at all like the flab around my action writing.
