CONVERGENCE POINT cover reveal!!!

Agent Samantha Rose has already died once…and knows the exact date she’ll die again.

Having taken down a terrorist organization bent on traveling through time to overthrow the government, Sam figured she was done dealing with the unbelievable. Finally out of backwater Alabama, she’s the senior agent in a Florida district, and her life is back on track.

Until a scientist is found dead.  And then an eco-terrorist.  And then a clone of herself…again.

As the pieces start to fall together, they paint a picture that seems to defy everything we know about time and physics. But the bodies are all too real, and by partnering up with Agent MacKenzie once more, they might just figure out what’s going on.  And when.

Available November 24th everywhere ebooks are sold!

To be reminded of the release...

Wait... what? The title changed? Yes it did! This book was written under the working title JANE'S SHADOW. I blogged all about the change HERE.

Let's talk about cover art...

First off, this isn't a post about self-pub covers. Those are an entirely different art form. This post is about cover art done by publishers.

Misconception 1: The Author Has Full Control Of The Cover Art
Ha ha ha! No. Not even close.

In a big publishing house the cover art is chosen by the marketing team. They look at other books in your genre and price point and find something that fits. Whether it actually fits the book is a secondary concern. If you are lucky you'll get to send in a few ideas. If you aren't, well, there's a reason there's an apple on the cover of Twilight and not a vampire.

With a smaller press the artwork will be handed to the designated cover artist, who has never read your book, and they will do their best with the description you've sent them. If you don't like their interpretation you might just have to suck it up. If you're lucky they'll change it, if not... too bad!

Misconception 2: You Will Have Original Art For The Cover
Oh, honey, you're adorable. It's not happening.

The bottom line is king in publishing. Unless you earned a substantial advance there is very little money set aside for marketing, and most of it will go to paying the publicist, cover artist, and anyone else on the marketing team. Big press or small, if you aren't a Big Name you are getting stock images.

Publishers save their full court press for the books they've invested money in. That's just life.

Misconception 3: Your Cover Will Never Change
o.0    Have you never heard of Harry Potter?

Covers change based on the market. If you have a bestseller you may see several (if not hundreds) of evolutions of the cover over the years your book is on the shelf. If your book sells internationally there will be different covers for the different regional markets. The USA cover isn't the same as the UK cover isn't the same as the Brazilian cover.

Misconception 4: The Cover Will Be Beautiful
You sweet summer child.

The cover will be marketable. What "marketable" means varies by press. Whether the author will love the aesthetic and design is another matter. Whether the readers will like the cover is completely beyond your control. Accept that at least one person will give you a 1-star review because they hate your cover and move on with your life. Some people will never be happy.

What Can You Do About It?
Roll with the punches.

The better your sales the more clout you'll have when it comes to covers. Maybe. To a degree. If you absolutely must have control over your covers than consider self-publishing or working as your own cover artist. Smaller presses may consider letting you make your own cover if your skills meet their standards. For larger houses, let the marketing team do their job and focus on writing.

Any questions?

Even Villains Play The Hero Cover art Reveal

Yay! Cover art! This is the cover for the print edition that will have Even Villains Fall In Love, Even Villains Go To The Movies, and Even Villains Have Interns. It's the only place EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE will be in print. The other two will be available as stand alone print editions in case you have a burning need to fill your shelf with every possible edition of my books.

This will be as thick as a normal paperback and roughly 400 pages long (formatting changes page count a little).

There are three more books planned for the series (featuring Maria, Blessing, and Gideon). All of those will have an ebook and a thin print edition. After Gideon's book is finished there will be another Heroes & Villains Collection with those books.

EVEN VILLAINS PLAY THE HERO will come out later this year. Print books take longer because there's a lag between printing and when it gets to me or Amy Laurens (my partner in crime) for proofing. Once the book is proofed and we know the margins aren't wonky it takes a few more weeks to filter out to all the markets.

We all have our favorite superhero stories – now it's the villains' turn to talk.

Zephyr Girl broke into Dr. Charm's lab looking for the affair of the century; she found happily ever after instead. But now, seven years later, Tabitha walks away with no warning, and Evan faces the ultimate decision: world domination, or the woman he loves? With their four loveable daughters, Evan sets out to rescue his wife—and his marriage—proving that Even Villains Fall In Love.

Hunted by The Company as a rogue hero, Angela, eldest of the quads, heads to California—because Even Villains Go To The Movies. When a gang of super-powered jewel thieves hit town, Angela must choose between lying low or helping a superhero who's too hot for his own good—in more ways than one.

In Even Villains Have Interns, Angela's sister Delilah hears rumors of big-game hunters in town and a mysterious drug that everyone—including The Company—is after. Teaming up with the spooky Spirit of Chicago, she aims to take down the dealers, the mobsters, the kingpin, and The Company. The only thing that might be difficult is doing it all without falling in love...

I'll post more news as we get closer to a release date, but I'm super happy to see EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE in print! It's been a long time coming. :)

EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS Cover Art Reveal!

Bootleggers, drug dealers, crooked cops, and dirty politicians... Chicago has always had a reputation for indulging in the finer vices of life. That’s why Doctor Charm’s favorite daughter found America’s Second City so appealing, criminals are never boring. As second in command for the powerful Subrosa Security group, Delilah Samson finds opportunities to use her superpowers at every turn. Whether it’s stealing a priceless French painting from a mobster or stopping a drug deal, she’s game.

In fact, the only thing she doesn’t care for is Chicago’s favorite native son, Deputy Mayor Alan Adale, the man who made Lucifer jealous. Sinfully handsome, or possibly just sinful, Adale has been pursuing Delilah since she first arrived, and she’s been dodging.

When she finds ties between the new kingpin in town and a drug The Company wants to buy so they can create more superheroes, Delilah takes the gloves off. Teaming up with the spooky Spirit of Chicago, she aims to take down the dealers, the mobsters, the kingpin, and The Company. All without falling in love with the one man capable of capturing her heart.

Cover Art Is Coming!

Hello from the hotel!

Last time I had internet this slow I was using dial-up and AIM. No matter. I'll survive. The internet is slow but how many hotels offer a full kitchen with dishwasher and oven? Other hotels offer fresh-baked cookies, this one lets you bake your own!

If you're stuck in a hotel for a week or so in the Kansas City area I recommend Chase Suites and Hotels. Having a kitchen is a miracle.

And so is having cover art. The fabulous Victoria Miller who designed the cover for EVEN VILLAINS GO TO THE MOVIES came back to do EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS and she's really knocked it out of the park.

So, here's the deal. I really hate newsletters because my email is already full enough. However, for a lot of people reading the blog and hitting social media is hard to do daily and they miss announcements about new releases. The happy compromise between these two is for me to only send out a newsletter when I have big news, new cover art, or a new release. And to compensate you for taking up email inbox space everyone who subscribes to the newsletter is automatically entered in a drawing for a free copy of the new release.

Newsletter subscribers also get a free first peek at the cover art and stories. Which means I'm sending a letter out this weekend to everyone with a sneak peek at the cover art for EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS. And you need to sign up for the newsletter so you can see that cover art and read the opening pages of INTERNS.

Newsletters not your bag? No worries. There are other ways to get alerts for new books.

REBOOT Cover Reveal

“Welcome to immortality in utopia!”

From the moment Damien signed up for a perfect life with ReGen Inc., he didn’t ask any questions. He didn’t want or need to know. But after he’s rebooted this time, there are gaps in his memory he can’t ignore, and people he no longer recognizes are accusing him of betrayal. When someone dies, he’s determined to go looking for answers…but sometimes it really is better to forget.

 Excerpt

Someone pounded on his door. Damien jerked out of bed, heart hammering. Had ReGen realized their mistake? Were they coming to wipe the rest of his memories?
Reality swept over him as the last of the fog of sleep faded. He wasn’t a hermit. People often came to visit, though they weren’t usually so loud about it.
He pushed off the bed, a slight stiffness making his movements awkward. He clipped the doorframe on his way out and cursed at the spike of pain in his shoulder. Clumsy! The last thing he wanted to do was damage this new body so soon after a reboot.
“Hold on!” he yelled at the unknown visitor hell-bent on punching a hole through his front door.
He was still clothed from last night, but he paused in front of his mirror to drag his fingers through the tufts of his dark hair. “Yes, all right. I’m coming!” He tugged his shirt straight. “Open.”
A dark-haired woman stumbled through the door and fell against him. “Damien!”
His arms circled her by instinct, but the impact sent him staggering back a step or two. “Whoa!”
She gazed up at him, her hazel eyes red-rimmed as if from crying, and her pretty face screwed into wrinkles. “I was so worried. When you didn’t come over last night…”
“Last night? Come where?” Her body pressed into his was causing all kinds of interesting reactions, but confusion overrode them. “Who are you?”
“Who?” Her eyes widened, and she jerked out of his embrace. “What’s wrong with you?”
Fear swamped him again, a cold that chilled him to the bone. “Diagnostics says I’m fine.”
“Diagnostics?” She backed away, as if he’d morphed into the worst kind of monster, then grabbed his right hand. Damien flinched as she rubbed her thumb hard over the back of his hand. Over the place where his scar had been. “Oh…” She dropped his hand, her head still bowed. “Oh, Damien.”
“What?”

Her gaze knifed through him, accusing. “You’ve been rebooted.”

Cover reveal of THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS by Cassandra Marshall

Don't you love this cover? I saw the rough version and my jaw just dropped. It's so pretty! Don't you want this on your shelf?

Alison Arroway takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. She has to, or she won’t get paid. Alison is a stunt double for pampered teen actress Pomegranate and when the director takes the shoot to Portugal, Alison is anything but thrilled to be rooming with Pom. But getting to hang around teen hearthrob Erik? Now that’s a plus.

Erik invites both girls on a sunset boat trip and Alison manages to have a decent time. Until the storm hits and the boat is shipwrecked on a small island, leaving Erik missing and the boat captain dead.

In the morning light, Alison and Pom find themselves on the lost island of Atlantis. Only one problem: now that the girls know the secret of the island, the Atlanteans don’t want them to leave. They're stuck with corsets, full-skirted dresses, and the strange steam-driven contraptions that are just a way of life for the islanders.

When a plot by the ruthless army Captain to take over the island and declare himself General over all emerges, an underground group promises to return the girls to the mainland if they can help stop him. They'll go through a mountain, literally, to find the Book of Blue, a book that will explain how to make ‘the stars fall sideways' in order to save the day and earn their freedom.

THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS, a YA Steampunkish fantasy, coming October 1st from MolliePup Press!

Cover Art Reveal: TWISTED METAL

This is the unofficial cover art for TWISTED METAL. It is finished, but hasn't been queried and doesn't have a publication date. I won a free cover from the talented Dani Fine (@DanielleFine1 ) and asked her to do the sequel to FEY LIGHTS. For those who have been asking for a longer work, this is a full-length novel.

Ar Theta One, aka Roan, is a doctor in the Hospital of Little Mercies on the perpetually war-torn planet Pequena. She doesn't expect much out of life, although survival would be nice. The odds aren't in her favor, though, when she's taken to a military post on the moon.

During a military coup the prisoner Roan kept alive for torture saves her life, and loses his own when they crash land on an alien planet.

As a reminder, Roan has the metal shrapnel from the shuttle and a piece of the prisoner's face mask made into a ring. She wears it everywhere. Including to the new university where she teaches, and in front of a man with a familiar face and strange scars.

Explosions, bad decisions, and secrets alienate Roan in her new world. With a past like this haunting her, can she ever build a future?

I wrote TWISTED METAL back in February of 2010, the fourth novel in that universe. I abandoned the whole universe later that year.

Sometimes I go back in my files, find an old story, and wonder why I quit. With TWISTED METAL I quit because the ending was a Hawt Mess (that's the official term) and I wasn't sure how to fix it. Two years away from the disaster zone gave me a clearer perspective. That means TWISTED METAL is up for revision and publication.

*note* I will need betas when the ending is cleaned up. I'm looking at late 2012, early 2013. Let me know if you're interested and I'll let you know when I need betas.

EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE - Cover Art Reveal

Shiny... Do we love it?

I never have a cover in mind when I'm writing a book. Some authors do, but I never gave it much thought. So when the artists over at Breathless Press asked me for thoughts I was stumped. I knew what I didn't want (nudity) but not what I did want. EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE is such an oddball story. It's not true sci-fi, it's not really romance, and it's not fully bio-punk.

This cover captures EVFIL very well for me. From the cityscape in the background to the planet in the foreground, I love it. That's Tabitha. One hundred percent beautiful, confident, and she draws your eye. Evan... he's not *my* Evan. I might have a teensy-tiny crush on the model I based Evan off of. The cover art's Evan comes very close to the "real thing" and has a perfect sly smile.

EVFIL comes out April 4th. I hope you love it!
