Happy 5th Birthday to Breathless Press!
Five years ago Breathless Press opened the doors with little more than a hope and a dream. Years of hard work, great editors, astounding authors, and more hard work have paid off and now Breathless Press is the place readers go to find the best books around. Well, one of the places. Let's not quibble.
Breathless Press is also home to my Heroes and Villains series starting with EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE, followed by EVEN VILLAINS GO TO THE MOVIES, and the soon-to-be-released EVEN VILLAINS HAVE INTERNS (release date pending). And, do you know what happens when presses celebrate birthdays? They have sales!
Everyone who doesn't love cheap books, raise your hands.
*crickets*
I thought so. Everyone loves books on sale! I love them. You love them. Great Aunt Mable loves them. Even my MeeMaw who might shoot you if you tried to buy things at full price loves them! And MeeMaw doesn't love much.
Now, let's try another group exercise. Who has four dollars? Who has four American dollars they do not need to make rent, pay bills, or buy food? Okay, everyone who has their hands raised, click THIS link.
All Breathless Press books are 50% off in August to celebrate their birthday and that means you can pick up both Heroes and Villains books for just $4. Pretty snazzy, right? Two books, four dollars. Heck, for you coffee drinkers out there that might be cheaper than your morning latte. For everyone else, that's at least two hours of entertainment for the half the price of a movie ticket. And I promise the writing is *way* better than that one movie you hated.
Go on, buy yourself a book. You deserve a treat today. :)

Welcome to the #HeroHop With Dr. Charm
VILLAIN Hop. That should say Welcome to the Villain's Hop, Ladies. And gentlemen too, I suppose. You gents feel free to shuffle in and find a seat in the back somewhere, feel free to take notes.
Now, Ladies... I understand your confusion at finding an eloquent, intelligent, well-dressed, heterosexual man here rather than the promised muscle-bag "hero" society normally foists off on you. It makes sense after a fashion. If the "hero" is too stupid to think his way out of a wet paper bag then the universe must at least have blessed him with a cock that would make a horse envious.
To which I say: steroids.
All those muscle-bound meat heads are limp as month-old celery. You can't get them up with viagra, and let's face it, you could have a better conversation with your vibrator.
Now, I'm not suggesting a threesome - Tabitha doesn't like to share - but I feel it is my duty as a pillar of the super villain community to promote the villains. Really, give evil geniuses a chance.
Just look at what the typical hero has to offer....
BROODING STARE - Perfected in Gothic romances placed on windswept moors the Brooding Hero stares off into the distance, a wall of impenetrable mystique. Do you know why he's staring? Because there's buggerall else to do, his entire conversational (and probably sexual) experience revolves around sheep, and the last two brain cells he hasn't drunk into oblivion are dying of loneliness and neglect. Bang him if you like, but remember to bathe after. Sheep have fleas and so does he.
HELPFUL NEIGHBOR - I thought the video for "Call Me Maybe" was all the hint you needed. Yes, he's sweet. He'll change your tire, take you shoe shopping, and remember your birthday. He also kisses a picture of me before bed every night. Give up and buy batteries, this guy will never give you what you want.
THE MAN WITH A PAST - He's been wounded, betrayed, and abandoned. He has Issues. He's fifty shades of In Need Of A Therapist. Did you want a lover who you could trust with your heart, body, and soul? To bad, you adopted the equivalent of the ugly dog who isn't housebroken. Sure, he's so ugly he's almost cute, and there's a chance for kinky sex, but at the end of the day you're stuck with a guy who has the emotional maturity of bait fish.
Rather than kiss your dreams goodbye, why not kick the "hero" out and find a real man. Here's my list of what to look for in a potential Soulmate based on seven years of happy marriage (and a few very rocky months).
PLANS FOR WORLD DOMINATION - He will never forget your birthday. He will never forget your anniversary. He will never give you a smelly jacket leftover from high school instead of a real present. Sure, the brooding man on the moors can give you a crumbling castle, but the Evil Overlord can you give you the world.
MINIONS - Do you know what the market price of a good babysitter is? I don't, I have minions. When my wife wants to go to see the latest movie, or spend the night at the museum we leave the kids with my hyper-intelligent (because I designed them that way) minions and go out. No calling around trying to find a teenager who is both responsible enough to tie their own shoes AND single. Nope. We just go. As the bumper sticker says: No Minions, No Romance.
THE ABILITY TO IMPROVISE - Every good villain knows that no plan survives first contact with the enemy. As such, every successful villain has learned to think on the fly. We are used to the capricious whims of fate, which means super villains are prepared to adapt to your changing needs. A woman's mind moves quickly, like a supercomputer you can consider many options at once and change topics at speeds that leave a "hero" with whiplash. Your average Man With A Past won't even notice, because he never listens. But a villain? A villain will not only listen to every word you say but will have an informed opinion, a shoulder to cry on, and chocolate. True, it may be stolen chocolate, but it's chocolate and it's your favorite kind.
Now, wouldn't you rather spend your night with a super villain. Crime isn't the only thing we excel at...
Because this is a blog hop I've been persuaded to give away more than just good advice that will improve your love life immeasurably. First, a $10 gift certificate to Tabitha's favorite sock store, SOCK DREAMS. Second, a copy of my story EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE, because I think we need to spend more time together. (How many heroes tell you that and aren't trying to get you out of your pants? That's right: none.)
The blog hop grand prizes are as follows:
Winning is simple, just leave a comment with your email address below. I'd love to hunt down a winner if they forgot, but I promised my wife I would give up the criminal life, and I keep my promises at least ninety-eight percent of the time. You can earn extra entries for this blog by tweeting, facebooking, blogging, or buying... just hit the buttons on the rafflecopter widget.

Midsummer Magic - Part of the SFR Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop
There's something a little magic about Midsummer, isn't there? The sultry air, the song of the crickets, the stars twinkling above you. Midsummer nights are made for falling in love while you walk in the moonlight with that special someone.
I've always wanted to attend a masked ball on midsummer's eve, no doubt inspired by watching Shakespeare's
And what is magic if not science that we don't understand?
One of the best parts of science-fiction romance is that we get to explore the shadowy region separating magic from science. Love, in every form, is magical. No matter how much we study love, or try to reduce it to its chemical parts, love defies scientific understanding. The expression of devotion between a couple who are truly in love is something science can't define. Something that can't be recreated in a lab (except between the scientists perhaps, but that's another story).
My new story, FEY LIGHTS, goes even further into the dark jungle dividing magic and science to explore two civilizations divided by the loss of technology. Jeani is a genetically modified human from a technologically advanced civilization who crash lands onto a human world that has lost their technological advancements. On that world strange lights that we might call comets or auroras are called Fey Lights, and are considered a gateway to the fairy realm. When Jeani's rescuer finds her under the Fey Lights... well... you'll see! Let's just say that fairy magic isn't the only thing lighting up the night sky.

Social Networking and the 10% Rule
Ten Percent...
Ten Percent of your words should be on a public forum such as the blog, Face Book, or Twitter.
-- The average tweet is about 20 words long, that means you would write 200 words for each tweet.
Ten Percent of your followers will read any given post.
-- Out of the 243 blog followers about 24 regularly hit the blog on any given day. Out of my 1000+ Twitter followers I expect 100 to see any given tweet.
Ten Percent of your network are readers.
-- If I want to estimate sale generated by a blog post or Twitter feed I calculate the 10% after subtracting overlap from other source like blog readers who are also Twitter followers.
Ten Percent of your writing time should be business time.
-- If I have two hours a day to write I have roughly 15 minutes of that to devote to email, sending out review requests, and doing the busy office work that keeps the wheels turning. The more you write, the more you have in print, the more office work you're going to have.
Ten Percent of royalties should be set aside to pay it forward.
-- This is a rule I made for myself and don't expect or ask anyone else to follow. When I decided to take my writing from the "just for fun" to the "I want to get published" phase I set up my budget (because I like excel worksheets) and allotted percentages of my hypothetical income to the various things that I know are part of the Office Work of publishing. In my budget, ten percent is set aside for a specific charity for each book. If I ever publish JANE DOE ten percent of my royalties will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. For EVERY HERO NEEDS A VILLAIN the charity is March of Dimes. The tie ins are obvious when you read the books.
But I don't have a charity picked for EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE. I've gone back and forth considering child-focused charities, school, and battered women's shelters trying to decide which is the best fit. I know this is all hypothetical, I haven't seen a royalty statement yet, but it's something that bothers me because it's a loose end I need to wrap up.
So... which charity should get the ten percent?
And... do you have a ten percent rule? Do you think expecting ten percent of your follower to be readers is too high a number? To low? Let me know in the comments below!

This week's post is from the opening chapters of DUNGEON CRAWL: THE FALL and introduces two of the supporting characters: Errod and Kith-Alyssia.

“You serve the elven archer goddess?”
“No. Kith, the elven god of war, madness and literature. I am Kith-Alyssia. And you are?”
“Errod.”
“Just Errod?”
“Yes.”
“Not even Errod of the North?”
“No.”
Kith-Alyssia’s smile grew wider. “Are you busy tonight, Just Errod?”
“No.” His grin grew to match hers.
“Would you like to be?” the priestess whispered.

A super villain at the top of his game must choose between the world he wants and the woman he loves.

Dr. Charm VS The Pirates
Pirates aren't uncommon in the choppy waters of publishing. Every remotely successful author is all but guaranteed their own pirate story.Somehow I didn't think a niche genre novella selling for $2.99 from a small indie press would be the sort of thing to grab a pirate's attention. Frankly, I wasn't sure it was going to grab anyone's attention! It's my (very quiet) debut and authors are inclined to worry about things like this.
You can imagine my surprise when a Google Alert popped for a place I've never heard of: Mobilism.com
Someone was requesting the ePub version of my book (available from Breathless Press, All Romance e-Books, Book Strand, and 1 Place For Romance right now - it will be on Nook and KOBO in the next week or so) in exchange for 10 WRZ$, the currency of the Mobilism site. At first, checking from my phone, I thought this might be a book selling site that I just hadn't heard of. Stranger things have happened. I still don't know who buys book on Diesel, but I sell them there.
Alas, it wasn't to be. Someone wants to buy my $3 novella for $10 fake cash. That's quite a mark up, and out right theft. Most pirate sites either list the book for free, or the pirate changes the cover and sells a plagiarized text as their own. This is the first time I've run into a site where the pirates charge each other for the stolen copy. I guess it's Port Royal of the internet.
Mobilism claims it isn't a pirate site. This is from their welcome page:
Welcome to Mobilism...the single largest user-powered database of apps, games, movies and books for mobile device users of all platforms! With over half a million members and millions of users, over 100 000 releases, and more than 750 000 posts, Mobilism is one of the largest and oldest mobile platform sites, as well as, in our opinion, by far the most organized one.
So sit back, download some apps, learn something new, and enjoy your stay!
No pirated material is hosted on their site, only links. Which is a little like saying the pimp selling a ten-year-old on the street isn't really a pedophile, he's just enabling. Maybe the kid was 18, was he to be the judge? Did the pimp know a person paying for the kid's company for an hour wanted sex? Maybe they were going to play video games. It could happen...
Nor am I the first person to be violated by Mobilism. Lloyd Shepard, author of THE ENGLISH MONSTER found himself in a similar predicament. He asked the person why they were asking for a pirated copy, a legitimate question under the circumstances. The responses were actually polite, if a bit cliche. Pirating books is compared to the thrill of Robin Hood, or the dues authors owe society, or the fact that a person can get the book for free so they should be allowed to get the book for free.
There's even a page on the Kindle Boards going round and round on whether or not piracy is good for an author.
So, here's my 10 WRZ$ on the the subject of piracy...
I'm not flattered. I'm not happy. I don't think this will boost sales or help me in any way. It certainly isn't helping my Karma when I visualize the pirate being mauled and eaten by the bear in my backyard. Especially when I laugh at the idea of the pirate's skull showing up in tomorrow's pile of scat! (But, seriously, the look of surprise on your face, Pirate. He he he!)
Why would anyone steal my hard work?
Could the person asking honestly not find the ePub files? Were they impatient because Barnes and Noble and Kobo are lagging?
Could they not find my email address to ask me? I'm pretty sure I still have one author copy to give away.
If this were one of my short stories I don't think I'd be as upset. I give away my short stories to newsletter subscribers every month. And, in a sense, the short stories are already paid out. The only one who loses anything when I give away a short story is me.
But when EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE gets pirated, that's different. My editor suffers. My small press suffers. My cover artist suffers. My future career suffers because of lost sales. The misery is one eternal round.
If three dollars is really that far out of your budget, send me a sob story, I'll probably buy the book for you. And I will buy it, because that way my editor, my press, and my cover artist get their portion.
You see, that little book up there. I wrote it. I edited it. It's my creation, but I had help. The beautiful cover art was done by Dara England, who also did the cover design on SEVENTY. I had two editors, plus the copy editors and formatters and publicists and everyone else at Breathless Press who put time and energy into polishing the book and making it wonderful. They all deserve to get paid for their work. There is no argument you can make that makes their work something the public should have a right to for free.
Don't pirate my work, please. You're killing my zen, damaging my karma, and generally making life darker for everyone who put work into this book.
If you really, truly, desperately want to spend $10 on EVFIL, send me an email. You can send me $10USD and I will send you EVFIL in any format you like plus a signed thank you note. It's really not that hard. Promise.

The EVFIL in the Wild contest is almost over!
You only have a few more days to send me a picture of EVFIL!
If you want to enter but can't because you can't find EVFIL in your preferred format, send me an email and I'll help you out.
The basic rules for EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE in the Wild contest are simple: you have your copy, snap a pic and send it to me for a chance to win a $10 Gift Certificate to Sock Dreams! Easy!
Except, not so much, right? Several people have said they can't snap a pic of EVFIL because they read on their phone (like I do) and they use their phone as a camera. There's definitely a wave/particle conundrum there. I don't want anyone to miss out, socks are important! So, if you can't snap a picture of your copy, send me your favorite line in a tweet( @LianaBrooks) or an email (click the Email Me button on the right side of the blog).
The winner will be picked May 5th, so get those pictures and quotes to me ASAP!

What's your superpower?
In the Heroes and Villains universe there are four types of people: superheroes, super villains, rogues, and civilians. In gaming terms these people would be Lawful Good, Chaotic Evil, True Neutral, and Non-Player Characters.Whose side are you on?
If you lived in the Heroes and Villains universe, what would you be? Are you a superhero, standing for tight spandex and killer smiles? A super villain with an over-the-top scheme and cunning minions? A rogue might do anything next?
I'm working on EVERY HERO NEEDS A VILLAIN, so leave your secret identity in the comments and you might find yourself surviving to the final draft (or not - I make no promises).

SFR Brigade Library Updates
I'm updating the SFR Brigade library again! If you write SFR, please stop by and fill in the sheet so I can add your book to our recommended reading list. :o)
What is SFR? Well, it's what I write. It's science-fiction AND romance.
Science-fiction with a romantic subplot that could be removed without damaging the story is sic-fi.
Romance set in space, but that could be moved to any culture or time is romance.
An illicit liaison of the two genres results in a book that needs both the sci-fi and the romance to be complete. EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE needs the superheroes and genetic engineering, but it also needs the romance to be complete story.
Many of my favorite books are SFR (Cordelia's Honor, Price of the Stars, Finders Keepers, Downhome Zombie Blues...). The SFR Brigade is a group of sci-fi romance authors, readers, and fans who get together to share news and swap book suggestions. You can read the post on 5 Reasons You Should Join The SFR Brigade to get a better idea of who we are.

#SixSunday - Meet and Greet

In EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE the MMC Evan (aka Dr. Charm) tells his version of the night he met his wife, Tabitha. The events in EVFIL take place seven years after Evan and Tabitha get married and she never has a chance to tell her side of the story.
Why would a beautiful superhero marry a super villain anyway?
Tabitha's side of the story is Heroes and Villains Book #2: EVERY HERO NEEDS A VILLAIN and this is a snippet from their first meeting...
"You're the one that called." Fear choked me. My voice came out as a low, smoky purr rather than a clear alto.
His fingers steepled in front of his mouth. "You know," he said with a contemplative air, "I think I would have remembered calling someone like you. Almost positive, in point of fact; I make a habit of not calling superheroes."
A super villain at the top of his game must choose between the world he wants and the woman he loves.
Want to join? Sign up, pick a project, pick six sentences, post on Sunday, it's that simple!
P.S. Since it is Easter Sunday I'll be reading posts on Monday while I eat jelly beans. :o)

EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE - Debut
What a crazy ride!I started out as a joke with the Slackers, something for just my close friends, and now you get to read EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE! I guess that makes us friends, right?
Of course!
Once you finish reading we can share inside jokes and giggle over the things only we understand, because we're cool like that. (Sea monkeys!)

Breathless Press | All Romance eBooks | Amazon
If you believe the rumors you know that Doctor Charm, the wickedly sexy super villain, retired in shame seven years ago after his last fight with the superhero Zephyr Girl. The fact that the charming Evan Smith - father of four and husband of the too-beautiful-to-be-real Tabitha - bears a resemblance to the defeated Doctor is pure coincidence. And, please, ignore the minions.
Everything is perfect in the Smith household until Tabitha announces her return to work as a superhero. Evan was hoping to keep her distracted until after he rigged the 2012 presidential election, but – genius that he is – Evan has a backup plan. In his basement lab Evan has a machine whose sole purpose is keeping Tabitha hungry for him.
But children and labs don’t mix. The machine is broken, and Tabitha storms out, claiming she no longer knows him. World domination takes a back seat to meeting his daughters’ demands to get Mommy back right now. This time his genius isn’t going to be enough – he’s going to need both his evil alter-ego and the blooming super abilities of his children to save his wife. But even his most charming self might not be enough to save their marriage.
Happy reading!

I Write Mommy P0rn
Thinkstock via NickMom Blog
All around the web I've been seeing stuff about FIFTY SHADES OF GRAY. Is it fanfiction? Is it romance? Is it good, bad, indifferent? The reviews have been split. Some of the people love the series, others accuse the author of writing Mommy P0rn.
I haven't read the book so I can't offer my opinion there, but in a show of solidarity with the author - as a mother and author myself - I want to say: Yes, I write Mommy P0rn.
EVEN VILLAINS FALL IN LOVE is full of Mommy P0rn from page one, let me give you an example of what Evan (aka Dr. Charm) the super villain, father, husband, and protagonist does in this book....
... Evan, super villains and devilishly handsome man, washes dishes. *excuse me while I fan myself*
... he reads the kids a bedtime story *would you look at the nurturing side on that one!*
... he gives his wife unsolicited back rubs *I may need a cold shower*
... not once does he ever look at another woman and not think his wife is a thousand times better *because that's what makes a committed man so wonderful, isn't it, the fact that he will never leave the one he loves*
The only flaw in this perfect man (minus his tendency to be on the wrong side of the law while his wife works the side of truth and justice) is the fact that he can't cook. He can make reservations though, and with the way he fills out a Dior suit reservations are fine by me!
Mommy P0rn can be summarized in seven little words: If you love me, do the dishes.
I'm impressed that E.L. James was able to stretch dish washing out over three books. If she'd asked I definitely would have suggested she throw some sex in there, or at least make the guy wash dishes in just his blue jeans.
When you get done reading her book about foot rubs and waxing floors you can come read mine about a super villain set on taking over the world, the superhero he's in love with, their four little girls, and the basement full of color-coded polka dotted minions who spend their days trimming the lawn now that they've retired from a life of crime (sort of).
