I Write Like...

While reading through Six Sunday posts I ran across this quiz on one blog and decided to run my two projects through. Personally, I believe every narrator should have their own Voice.

Some authors cultivate their Voice so that any book you pick up by them you can tell who the author is. Some authors make it so you know which character is holding the POV when you pick up the book. I prefer the second kind of book. Works of the first sort tend to sound the same after the third or fourth book; you see that done in series that follow a new MC every book.

First, the novella...

David Foster Wallace
isn't a name I knew off the top of my head, I had to look him up. I like the tone of this piece and I'm planning on finding a copy of his Infinite Jest to read.

For my novel...

I write like
Edgar Allan Poe

Interesting. Poe doesn't write from the female POV often as I recall. This is a murder mystery though, so maybe that's how it ties in? Overuse of the word cadaver perhaps?

Who do you write like?

  1. I don't know if it's a good sign or not, but I put four different works into this thing and got four different results. Only one of whom I'v ever heard of. I got William Gibson (for my current WiP), Arthur Clarke (for my last book I wrote), James Joyce (for my second novel), and Mario Puzo (for a different book I started writing).

  2. Same as Stephanie, I got different writers for each story I put in. Wonder if it would break if I threw them all in at once!

  3. Thanks Liana, this was fun… although I was bummed because I got James Joyce too!

  4. I think having a different voice for each piece is a good idea, unless they each have the same narrator.

Marty- What? You don't like Joyce? I'd be offended, but you know I'm not. :o)

  5. Um, I got J.K. Rowling, Stephanie Meyer, and Margret Atwood. I think I am thoroughly depressed now.

  6. So far I've gotten Stephen King twice (my current wip + an old adult ms), Chuck Palahniuk four times (all YA fantasy), James Joyce twice (both MG fantasy), and my very first attempt at a novel (that I haven't touched since 2008) is apparently similar to J. R. R. Tolkien.

I'm not quite sure what to do with all this information now...

  7. According to the various chapters of my sci-fi novel, it seems I write like Ursula K. Le Guin or Leo Tolstoy. I'm just going to smile, nod, and feel honored.
